Nothing That Can't Wait Until Later

My husband and I went out to dinner this week to celebrate his break from the Capitalist Machine (aka his job).   We went to a local steakhouse.  Ok, it was a chain restaurant, but since it is in our neighborhood, that makes it “local”.

Anyway, we sat down at the bar while we waited for our plastic remote control thingy to buzz that our table was ready.  We ordered two wines, clinked glasses and sipped.  I set my glass down and glanced over the bar area.  There was a couple at a table nearby.   Both the man and the woman were texting on their cell phones.  When they were done, they set the phones down in front of them.  Why?  Why not put them back in their pockets?

Then I watched a couple sit down next to us.  The woman was texting something irrelevant to someone of little importance while her husband just stood there being ignored.  Truth be told, he didn’t look much like he cared that he was thrown over for a keyboard the size of a fingernail.

Right next to that couple was another couple.  The man, a military looking jock with a buzz cut, sat there manipulating his blackberries while his girlfriend sat next to him literally with her mouth open, in a fog.  I watched her for a full minute.  Her hand was keeping her head up, her eyes were unfocused staring at nothing.   She didn’t blink the entire time I stared at her.   Next to her, he just typed away.

Back to the couple next to us, she finally finished whatever conversation she was having and put the phone down in front of her.   She took a sip of wine, glanced down at the phone.  Said something to her husband, looked at the phone.  Although she finally set it down, it still dominated her interest.

Once we were seated, I looked around.  The couple in the booth next to us munched away, but both had a phone on the table in front of them.  They each periodically picked it up to check on it.  I have no idea what they were looking for or hoping to find.   And I didn’t really care.

Meanwhile, I sat at our table with my husband, my best friend.   I wanted to hear what he wanted to tell me.  He was sharing his last day with the company to whom he has given 20 years of his life.  He told me how he said goodbye to his friends, he talked about what he will do in the next few weeks.  He mentioned a couple jobs he would like to pursue.

And I soaked up every word.  I love the sound of his voice, I always have.   I love to watch him when he talks about something that excites him.  And I think his eyes are beautiful.  I adore the way he looks at me.
I was there to spend time with my husband, not my stupid cell phone.  I wanted to know what HE had to say, not what someone else can wait until later to tell me.

I abhor the use of cell phones in a place people go to be together and share thoughts with each other.  Why go out and be together if you are just going to sit there checking your stupid phones just in case you hear something more interesting from a person you aren’t even with.  What the hell can’t wait until later?
If I had pulled out a phone and started checking it while my husband was talking, what message would that have sent to him?   That what he had to tell me wasn’t very important and in the middle of a conversation, I was seeking other companionship by checking my phone to see if someone more fascinating was trying to get in touch with me.

Why on earth would I want to send that terrible message to him?  I went to dinner with my husband and during that dinner, I wanted to focus on him and I wanted him to focus on me.
It is just so disrespectful to the person you are with to keep checking your stupid phone.   Pay attention to the person you are with. You are with them for a reason.

Hang up your damn phone.  Turn it off.  Put it in your pocket.  Don’t look at it for an hour.  Quit worrying that you are going to miss something.   Cuz you know what?  You aren’t.  Life isn’t that interesting to require an update every 10 minutes.  You are not that interesting and neither are your friends.  You aren’t going to die if you don’t hear about Betty Sue’s breakup until tomorrow morning.  Just chill.

We went to the mall today and saw the same thing.  We got a slice of pizza in the food court and sat down to watch all the techies play with their stupid phones.  There was one table of teenage girls that just made me laugh out loud.  All three girls just sat there not talking to each other because they were all texting on their phones.  If you think about it, each girl was with two of her friends, but that wasn’t enough.  Each girl had to pull into the moment someone from another galaxy or zip code because what, her two tablemates were boring?  They weren’t enough stimulation?  Then why be with them?

I don’t know, maybe its just me.  But I think you should focus on the person across the table from you. Make that person feel like you find them as interesting as you find your phone.  Respect them by listening to them, making eye contact when they speak, laughing at their jokes and showing them you enjoy their company.  Make them feel loved and important.

And if you do keep checking your phone, then leave your friend and go sit on park bench all by yourself.   Obviously the person you are with isn’t important enough to require your full attention.   So just go somewhere that you can be alone with your phone.  Snuggle up to it, have dinner with it.  Text until your thumbs fall off.   I don’t care.  Know why?  Because I am at home, nice and warm with a man who enjoys me just because I am me.

I love the one I’m with.  At least who I am with is human.   Who do you share your nights with?

If You Open It - They Will Come

I was doing my shift at the kitty shelter last night, Focus on Ferals.  One of the residents, Kipton, is on medication this week.   I have to put a little bit of wet food (otherwise known as Gourmet Puree) on a plate, then pour the powered medication over it, mix in all the yummy pharmaceutical goodness and feed it to him.

Well, the other cats know that what I don't feed to Kipton, they get.  I barely picked up the can and the alert went out!  They started moving toward me, paw by paw, inch by inch.

I then opened the can and that did it!  The frenzy started.   "Mew", less polite was the "Meow, ahem, I said, me-OW!", and the totally pushy "Hey you there girly human, I am RIGHT HERE!".  Such language...

I started scooping the goop onto some paper plates and they were yelling and closing in on me and one even tried to climb my jeans!

I suddenly felt like Tippi Hedren in The Birds!!!

they are so cute...

Daylight Savings - Mind Trick or Real Savings?

Spring forward.  So it will be darker in the morning but stay lighter later.
All we did was shift the light, not extend it or save it.

There are still 24 hours in each day.   And we still slept 8 hours last night.  Even if the clock when we woke up says we woke up an hour later.   It was still 8 hours.  If you went to bed at midnight and woke up at 9:00, it is still only 8 hours.  You are not more rested or less rested because the numbers on the clock reflect a different time.

I found an article on National Geographic that states that we really aren’t saving any energy by shifting the daylight.  That was the original notion by Ben Franklin oodles of years ago.  And it was again the notion when we extended the amount of months that we live under the premise of daylight savings.

Yes, it is lighter longer, but now we are waking up in darkness again, so we are using the energy in the morning instead of the evening.  Wash out.

I am not complaining.  I’ve learned to live with it.  I’m just saying, using the word “savings” is a marketing gimmick.  Still 24/7/365.  No matter how you tick off the minutes of the clock and if your lights are on while you are watching the minute hand.

Don’t be late for work tomorrow!

Pandora's Pantyhose

Bought a pair of pantyhose last week.  Was in the unique position of feeling good about myself.   Thought I would dress up in a skirt and heels, show the world what I was made of and where I was keeping it.   You know the feeling, don’t you, girls?

So I took a shower, used the scented shower gel to soften the skin, extra conditioner to soften the hair.   Dried off, scented lotion, scented deodorant (fresh mountain spring laundry on a rainy morning in a meadow or whatever flavor it was).  Then dried my hair, curled it so tight that even Shirley Temple  would have been in awe.

My makeup was perfect.  My hair was perfect.  I was ready to get dressed.

I opened Pandora’s Pantyhose.  The evil object jumped out of the package, laid on the floor and stared at me.  A tiny little beige ball.  I picked it up.   I just couldn’t imagine how I was going to get a tiny 4” long pair of nylons onto my considerable bottom half.  If I could manage it, I would simply dub the result as the 8th Wonder of the World.

So, I sat on the edge of my bed, pointed my toes in a dainty fashion and wadded up one nylon portal.  I slid it halfway up my calf, then pointed the other group of toes, repeated procedure.

Now my legs were bound together by this strange apparatus wrapped around my calves.  I had to hop down off the bed, tried to take a step and almost fell over.   I managed to work the nylons up to mid-thigh.   Wiping the sudden droplet of sweat from my brow, I bent over and started to work on the right leg again.   Inch by inch I eeked the nylon northward.

The skirt I had chosen to wear was a beautiful tweed pencil skirt.  One of the few clothing items that actually makes me look thin.  I started chanting to myself, “it’ll be worth it, really, it’ll be worth it.”

The left leg took a wrong turn somewhere.  It was going sideways and just didn’t feel right.  I slid it back down, struggled to straighten it, and started yanking again.

As I wiped another bead of sweat from my makeup-covered forehead, I cast a weary glance at the sweater I had chosen to pair with the skirt.   Ugh.  It looked hot.  And not in the good fashion-model way.

Tug, tug.  The waistband of this evil product was finally around my hips.   My left leg was going a bit numb, the tight fabric must have been pressing on a random nerve.  Keep pulling, keep tugging.

Damn, the crotch part was like an inch too low.  I knew it would bug me all day if I didn’t fix it.  And I’d walk like a penguin.   Not classy.  I pushed the fabric down, pulled it back up.  Tug, tug and I was back in business.

Almost there, another inch or so.  Control top will suck in all my fat, make my tummy look like I do 1,000 sit-ups a day.  Oh yeah, this will be worth it.

Inch, pull, inch, scoot and *snap*, the waistband is in place!  Voila

I looked down.   When did I grow a second row of boobs?   WTH?   I stomped into the bathroom and looked at the reflection glass.  Pandora’s Pantyhose - what have you done to me?   I see why my stomach looks so flat.  All you did was push all the flab up.  My muffin cup runneth over!!

Control Top Pantyhose?  B. Freaking S.  Muffin Top Pantyhose is more like it!

By the way, I still looked fabulous that day.  After I wiped all the sweat off my face, reapplied all my makeup and pulled a tank top out of my closet.   But that is another blog entry.

Did I just see what I think I just saw?

Was that…?  I’m sorry, was that a PINK pick-up truck that I just saw?   Who in the world buys a PINK pick-up truck?!

What?  Oh, it’s not pink? Well, what is it then?   It’s what?  Fuchsia?  A fuchsia pick-up truck?  Is that supposed to make me feel better?

I can hear it now, in a restaurant, the announcement booming over the P.A, “Will the owner of a fuchsia pick-up truck please raise their hand?  Anyone? Anyone?  The owner of a fuchsia pick-up, please raise your hand.”

Yeah – I wouldn’t raise my hand either.    Go get your truck painted heather grey or something manly like that.

Goob.

M&Ms - America's Favorite Candy

M&M has long had the slogan, "Melts in your mouth, not in your hand."

I was 35 years old before I realized that didn't mean they had an extra strong coating that could withstand the heat of a person's hand...

I is a college graduate and I majored in marketing.  Sigh.
I don't know.  Maybe its just me.

Feeling Lucky

My husband and I were at the grocery store last Saturday night (because we have been married so freaking long that Saturday nights are now relegated to satisfying our stomach hunger instead of other more interesting hungers).

As we were heading toward the checkouts, we took a shortcut through the pharmacy aisle.   We passed a young man of about 20 years old.  He was facing the condom display, pondering all the options.   Believe you me, “Ribbed for her pleasure” is a marketing ploy made up by men and total b.s.   But that is another blog entry.

Anyway, we made it to the checkout.  My husband loaded our goods onto the sticky conveyer while I caught up on all the celebrity gossip and read the cover of all the magazines (Good Housekeeping, Redbook, Cosmo, etc).  Someone is having a baby, someone else is gay.  Someone is on a diet, fake boobs, 69 sex secrets men won’t tell you (which is stupid because if anyone is going to be forthcoming about what they want in the bedroom, it is going to be a man!) and the latest way to lose 20 pounds in 20 minutes eating double fudge brownies while hopping on one foot.

When I was finished catching up on the important world news, I looked over to the gigantic red lotto vending machine.  There was that same young man.  He was standing there contemplating his options of the quickest way to buy 20 tickets and become a millionaire right there in the grocery store.

I couldn’t help it.   Lotto tickets and condoms.   The first thing that popped into my mind was,
“He is looking to get lucky in every way possible way this weekend!”

No More Resolutions!

New Year's Resolutions (NYR) - Helpful or Crock?

I think Crock.  I really do.  The advertisers love it of course.  The entire diet industry runs 1,000 ads right after new years all screaming about New Years Resolutions.   I usually lose 3 pounds watching these ads because they make me puke up my dinner.  I am sick of 'em.

You know the song, "So this is Christmas and what have you done?"  Beatles, wasn't it?  That song sets up our thinking.  So we start with, "Not much. I haven't lost the weight. I haven't exercised.  I haven't stopped swearing.  I haven't saved money.  I haven't stopped saying I haven't..."

Then we all eat and drink to excess on December 31, wake up on January 1 puffy and bloated to be greeted with the barage of ads, "Are you puffy and bloated because you ate and drank to excess last night? Make a New Year's Resolution to buy our product (or join our program) and you won't be puffy for long!"

They are playing on our desire for a better life and the tradition of waiting until January 1 to do something new with ourselves.   What's wrong with Feb 1 or April 1?

Reaserch has shown that the majority of resolutions, especially diet and exercise resolutions, fail by March 1.  And then you are left with feeling like a failure, sitting on the couch, packing on the pounds and being beaten to death by the Guilt Fairy (I hate that old hag, she visits me a lot too.  I'd like to take her magic wand and stick it up her...)

But I digress, I was complaining about something (what else is new?).   Oh yes, NYR.

I made one a long time ago and it has never failed me.   I made a resolution to never again make another New Years Resolution.   And I have stuck to it ever since.   The concept is a mind game designed to set us up for failure.  And let's be honest, that is what most of us do - fail.  The aftermath of the failure is ugly and damaging.  And I for one do not feel like feeling like a failure right now.   Solution?  I stopped setting myself up.

So if there are things you want to do to improve yourself, fine.  Start today.  Don't wait for January 1 and then fail by March 1 and wait another 9 months for another January 1 to try again.   Accept your failure (which I should start calling "setback") and try again - quickly.  Next Monday, not next year.  And don't stop trying.    The worst thing would be to stop trying which will only give those advertisers the edge.

If you keep trying, then the next New Years you can laugh every time you see those commercials and say to the television, "Puh-leeze.  That was so LAST YEAR."

Me and my what?

All holiday season long, I kept hearing:

"Merry Christmas to you and yours."
"Happy Holidays to you and yours."
"Happy New Year to you and yours."

Everytime I heard that, I thought, "Me and my what?"

What's the big secret?  Why is it up to me to fill in the blank?  Just say it.  Me and cats?  Me and my postman?  Me and my Christmas tree?   People can't even take the time to wish me an entire Christmas thought?   It just dangles out there like a neglected participle, swinging in the wind.

That has just always bugged me.  It's not even a complete sentence.

I don't know.  Maybe its just me.

I'm going to be stingy and leave "yours" out of it.  I'll take care of you, you take care of yours.

Happy New Year to YOU!

Pink Everything

Pink mixers, pink pens, pink flags, pink toasters, pink t-shirts, pink paper, pink purses, pink lunchbags.

But now, I’ve had enough.  Pink Curbside Garbage Cans.  That is just the limit for me.  Picture this.
Cold morning, 28 degrees
Huge diesel waste truck pulls up to the curb of a house.
Tall man in heavy jacket hops off the truck bundled in knit hat, thick work gloves, stained leather work boots.
And he grabs – a gigantic PINK curbside garbage can.

I’ve been tolerating the whole pink thing.  I get it.  I understand that it is for support and awareness of breast cancer.   I get that.  But:
1. Pink is ugly
2. Pink is one of my least favorite colors
3. Pink is ugly
4.  Pink only reminds me of stomach upset (Pepto Bismol)
5.  Pink is ugly
6.  A gigantic plastic pink 50 gallon trash can sitting on the curb of someone’s house does not say to me “I support breast cancer research.”  It says to me, “I’m nuts and wanted a huge pink eyesore on my lawn.”

What does say “support”?  Bras.  Which brings the circle back to breasts.

Yea, I have them.  I know.  And the thought of losing them terrifies me.  The thought that they could kill me terrifies me.   HOWEVER, I try not to think about them or dying because of them very often.

I do not want to be reminded that I have breasts and that they could kill me everytime I bake a cake and use my pink mixer, or make some toast and use my pink toaster, or call a friend and use a pink phone. Or throw away the toast crumbs and the cake box into my 50 gallon curbside waste receptacle!

So, yes, I get it.  I support the research too.  But I do it by sending a check to someone, not by polluting my environment with everything pink!   My kitchen counters are 1970’s mustard yellow.  Can you imagine putting a pink mixer on that?

And think of this.  I purchase a pink mixer and have to stare at it for 20 years (if it is well made), just to support a ONE TIME donation to cancer research.   Ack!   Sounds more like a punishment to me.  No thanks.  I'll just send in a check.

And did I mention?  Pink is ugly.

Today's Groaner

I was driving home this evening and passed a local muffler shop.   Their sign said:

MUFFLERS - HALF OFF
I thought to myself, "Negative thinking.  Shouldn't the muffler be half ON?"

Maybe its just me...

Slaves to the Gas Prices

So, there are websites like this one on my local news channel http://www.woodtv.com/subindex/news/business/gas_and_fuel that pinpoint the lowest gas prices in the area.

I could drive 20 miles to the north side of town to save 5 cents a gallon.   Uh, no thank you.

And there are people who will wait in a very long line, clogging up the street, just because one gas station posts a price 8 cents lower than the one on the opposite corner.   I could sit in line for a half hour waiting for my turn at the pump, meanwhile breathing in fumes and wasting the precious gas I am in line to replace.  Yeah, that doesn’t seem like a plan either.

I drive by these stations, look at the lines and just shake my head.

Think about it:

8 cents x 22 gallons (that is the size of my tank).   That is $1.76.  I would save a whopping $1.76 cents by sitting in line for a half hour.

So next I ask myself what I would spend that $1.76 on.   Cigarettes?  No.  I quit smoking.  And those are like $85.00 a pack now anyway.  ½ pound of hamburger?   Maybe.   Paperback book?  No, those are $6.00 (for a new one).

No, my sanity is more precious to me than $1.76.  If I am ever hurting for money badly enough that I would idle and burn $0.75 worth of gas to save $1.75 per tank – God help me.

Stop the Gob!

A recent hunger pang caused my husband and me to take a trip to the grocery store.  After tossing lots of healthy items into our cart (Kit Kat Bars, Hawaiian Punch and a few bottles of wine), we headed for the checkout.

Hubby grabbed a box of candy called Gobstoppers.   I looked at him and asked the question that is probably running through your mind right now:

What are Gobs and why do we need to stop them?

I thought it was a silly question based on the silly name of a silly candy.  But a Gob is an actual thing.  If you are interested in finding out what a Gob is, read this article.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gobstopper

Otherwise, find peace in the knowledge that Gobs CAN be stopped and you are in no real danger.

Cell phone commercial

FINALLY a commercial that sums up how I feel about about the cell phone addiction in this country-- and they do it in ONE word.

 Really?

Freeway Gods - Satan in Disguise?

The Freeway Gods were out to get me again today.  I don’t know why they hate me, but they do.  Today, it was their mission to get me to slow down.

1. I could barely get out of my office parking lot because the cars were lined up so far back.

2.  When I did finally manage to break free of the corporate parking pen, I had to slam on my brakes for a pedestrian crossing at the light.

3.  They let me drive down the road toward the freeway but apparently I was going too fast so they arranged for an 18 wheeler to pull out of a side street up ahead of me and proceed to drive 25 mph to the freeway ramp.

4.  Yes, of course the 18 wheeler got on the freeway ramp right in front of me.  You didn’t think the Gods were going to stop with #3, did you?

5.  So, onto the freeway we merged at- yawn -35 mph.   I watched with envy at all the cars in the left lane hurtling by us at 70+ mph, laughing and laughing.  I think one of them even pointed at me.

  6.  I was allowed to finally go around the truck, gaining admittance to the secret club (the left lane), only to meet construction downtown.  Although one sign said “Both Lanes Open”, everyone felt the need to slam on their brakes at the sign that said, “Right Lane Closed” - despite the fact that there were no cones or barrels in or blocking  the right lane, it was obvious that people the people brave enough to chance it were still rather suspicous.  They were in the questionable right lane but kept leaning toward the left lane (aka ME).

7.  I made it to the US-131 ramp safely, since I was only going 40 mph.  Merged onto 131 without incident, which surprised me.  I thought the Gods might have stepped out for a smoke and perhaps forgotten their task of punishing yours truly.

So naive of me, which brings us to number…

8. Rocketing down 131 south at the ol’ double nickel (that’s 55 mph for those of you born after 1978), I was stuck behind a pick-up truck which was stuck behind a semi truck which was closely following a car carrier truck.
Naturally I thought of changing lanes, but the van in the right lane was pacing the pick-up and as an added bonus to my sanity – had left his right blinker on for three miles and I had a heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach that it wasn’t going to be turned off anytime soon.
I also could have changed lanes to the left, but they were only going 2.5 mph faster than my lane.

9.  My mind wandered to sandy beaches, sunny days and anti-anxiety medications.   And then

FINALLY – AN OPENING!

10.  I raced into the left lane!  I barreled around the semis and Mr. Blinker!  I shot back over to the right lane and into the 44th St. Exit!  Whoo Hoo!  Freedom!  Yes sir, we’re moving now!

Did you hear it?  Someone is laughing.  Who is laughing?  Crap.  The Gods.

11.  I got stopped at the light at the top of the ramp.

12.  I got stopped at the light at the very next street.

13.  Light turns green.  The truck in front of me peeled off at A (as in one, single, solo, uno) mile an hour.    He picked it up to 20 mph and then decided to live dangerously… top speed of 38mph.    I had to check and see if I had gotten out of first gear yet.   Yep.  3rd gear.  Wow.

 14.  Once again considered changing lanes.  Except the bozo in the other lane decided to race, or is it PACE the bozo in front of me.  They were BOTH going 38 mph.  I felt like a pawn in Parcheesi game stuck behind a blockade.     What a dangerous city I live in.  I hope my insurance rates don’t go up.

15.  Sandy beaches.  Cool breezes.  Muscle bound men carrying fruity drinks.  Tiki music wafting around like birds in the clear blue sky.   What?  Sorry, drifted off.   Oh, my turn off.   Oh look.  Mr. 38 mph pick-up is getting into the left lane right in front of me.   Yeah.   The gods aren’t crazy, they are laughing their (*$#*^ off.

16.  Light turns green, we go.  And I use that word loosely.   We turned so slow that I almost stalled my truck in 2nd gear.   Lug, lug, lug.

17.  Look, Mr. 38 mph pick-up is turning into my subdivision right in front of me.   I wiped the tear off my cheek and pushed on.

18.  I finally, finally, blessedly made it to my house.  I drove up the driveway faster than half my ride home!

And here I sit, crying in my beer (wine actually), wondering what those SOB’s are plotting for me tomorrow.
